The black and white photo is interesting, I would maybe included a little bit more lighter values. The color photo is a great example of color against a neutral background.
I like how you can see the light coming through and underneath the door in the background. I do not think that it would not be as successful if you couldn't see it because it gives you more of an eye path and balances the photo a little more. I agree with Clark, I think that more lighter values may make it more successful.
I like the brick in your color photo, and as a viewer I wish it extended all the way to the ground instead of changing to plain concrete. The plainness of both the background behind the pumpkin and the sidewalk leading up to it make it a rather static photo. The orange of the pumpkin really pops out against the background though - just make the background a little more interesting.
I like how your compositions are similar. I think that together they work to show how you can create different moods with different color schemes and similar compositions.
I love your black and white image; it looks like it could be the title screen of a video game. I would have tried lighting the side of the subject more so that we can see its dimensions better, but other than that I love that its bright lighting sharply contrasts against your black background. The pumpkin image is so cute! Though I would agree with Alyssa about maybe photoshopping the brick to come all the way down to the ground. While the pumpkin is a bright element that commands your attention the most, I think seeing it in front of the bricks would amplify that interest.

Both photos have a very nice focus and clear focal point. It would be nice to see more in your black and white photo or just a slightly different angle so more of the floor is seen. Great work!!
B+W Interesting minimal composition composition. It would be nice to have a greater variety of values in the background, however. Right now the background is so dark in comparison to the subject that the two objects in the far left don't stand out quite enough - they get lost. I realize that they're not the focal point, however the balancing act between these objects and the main subject gets lost due to the very dark values.
Color Love the pop of color happening against the neutral. However the composition isn't quite working. You have some leading lines going on with the bricks, but they feel really separate from the rest of the image -- almost like they're out of place. Maybe they need to be toned down? Or maybe it would feel less distracting if they weren't there at all? Either way, I'd work on it.
